winea message from sommelier sean beck

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Trevisio, the Medical Center’s beautifully designed restaurant, featuring heartfelt Italian cuisine. My name is Sean Beck and I am Sommelier for Backstreet Café & Hugo’s restaurants. The owner of these fine establishments, Tracy Vaught, was delighted when the Medical Center invited her to join the Trevisio team. Tracy, one of the cities most successful restaurateurs and her partner John Watt (Executive Chef of Prego’s) will be managing Trevisio and working with the staff to make this one of our cities best restaurants. Chef Watt will assist our outstanding Executive Chef Jon Buchanan to bring, exciting and well thought flavors to every plate. Our management staff is focused on bringing the highest quality service to every table, ensuring a wonderful experience for you and your guests.

We feel honored to be part of this jewel of the Medical Center and are thrilled over the chance of elevating Trevisio to the heights of Houston cuisine.

When Tracy & John agreed to become involved here, they asked me to help create a wine list fitting the wonderful menu and refined nature of this great restaurant. I am excited for this opportunity to pair wine to the delicious dishes created by Chef Buchanan and John. While Trevisio is quite unique from the other restaurants we run, the wine list will share some of the philosophies we have at HUGO’S, PREGO’S, and BACSTREET CAFÉ.

We believe wine should be accessible in both price and availability. We believe wine to be a necessary part of healthy living and the perfect partner to great food. We believe wine should be fun, which means you will always find new and exciting selections on the list with plenty of descriptions to help make your selection. Finally, we believe wine should reflect the food you are serving, to this end the list will focus largely on the wines of old world countries: Italy, France, Germany, and Spain. Of course, there will also be some exciting selections from California, Washington, and Oregon. We hope you enjoy our philosophy and wish you a great meal with some terrific wine and good company!

featured wines

’05 Leitz “Dragonstone” Riesling (Rheingau) - Germany
Few wines are better suited for the heat of summer than Riesling, and the Leitz Dragonstone is a great example. At its best German Riesling is like fresh fruit, clean, juicy, and invigorating. Josef Leitz is one of the up and coming producers of the Rheingau and his Dragonstone is a juicy and happy wine with , with lovely elegant finish!
Glass: $8.50 Bottle: $34.00

’03 Caparzo La Doga Morellino Di Scansano (Tuscany) – Italy
Nestled in the Sourthern edge of Tuscany is the little appellation of Morellino Di Scansano. Home to some really nice Sangiovese, the grape of Chianti, their wines lean towards a modern style with dynamic fruit. More exciting than Chianti, it has llots of blackberry and dark cherry flavors and finishes with that classic dry style and balanced infusion of Oak.
Glass: $9.00 Bottle: $36.00

’03 De Forville Nebbiolo d’Alba (Piemonte) – Italy $48
Nebbiolo is one of the most important grapes in the world of wine, it is the King of Italian reds, used to make the epic Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s. Produced from the fruit found around the Alba Village, Nebbiolo D’Alba is ligher than its big brothers, but still containing that fleshy dark fruit, soft notes of anise, and a wonderfully balanced yet weighty texture.

’90 Domaine Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne – France $150
1990 was one of the greatest vintage ever for Champagne, leading many houses to making there best vintage bubbly ever. The ’90 Domaine Ruinart is no exception, world class Champagne made from Chardonnay grapes, it remains fresh and lively, yet with a delicate texture, brilliant citrus fruit, and perfect acidity. Always a great wine, it is even better as we are selling it for much less than the $3000.00 most restaurants sell it for.

’02 MacRostie Pinot Noir (Carneros) – CA $52
A perfectly amicable and pleasant Pinot to join your dinner table, the MacRostie is a solid hit. An underrated wine, it is generously loaded with well defined and pleasing flavors. The wine is polished, with a fleshy texture and a mix of tart cherry, plum, and shades of cinnamon. A welcome introduction to the world of Pinot Noir
